A couple of weeks ago a classic car buddy from Houston gave me the business section of the Houston Chronicle from November 3, 2011. Right in the center of the page was an article written by Tom Krisher of the Associated Press. The headline reads “100 YEARS OF CHEVY”. Under the headline is a photo of the first car Chevrolet produced the 1912 Series C “Classic Six” priced at $2,150 equivalent to $50,000 in today’s dollars. Also in photo was Louis Chevrolet, William (Billy) Durant and his son Cliff. Click here to view larger photo.http://www.flickr.com/photos/chevroleteurope/5742237114/in/photostream/lightbox/
The article in the Houston Chronicle states some interesting facts for classic car people, especially if you are a die hard Chevy fan.
1.Chevrolet Motor Company was launched Nov. 3 1911 when Louis Chevrolet joined with William Durant to start a new brand.
2.Chevy imbedded itself in American culture, sometimes changing it by knowing what people wanted to drive before they did.
3.Chevy’s were mentioned in more than 700 songs.
4.No other auto brand has come close to the adoration that Chevy won from customers, especially in the 1950s and ’60s.
5.By 1927 Chevrolet overtook Ford as the country’s most popular brand selling more than 1 million cars that year.
6.Chevy was the top U.S. brand for 52 of the next 83 years.
7.Until 1955 most Chevy’s were practical, cheap and cost little to maintain also lacked style until Harley Earl began to make style as important as mechanics beginning with the Bel Air which was known for it’s beauty and V8 powered speed.
