• ABOUT THIS CAR
• The Last Hugger One of the final ’69s, and the most complete L78 in the group.
• 124379N711022 left Norwood on November 11, 1969, in the final weeks of the extended 1969 run that Chevrolet carried into November while the second-generation car was delayed. It shipped to Bowes & Herron Ltd. in Fort St. John, British Columbia, and it is about as complete as an L78 Camaro could be ordered.
• L78 396/375, the most powerful engine you could buy in a Camaro without a COPO, backed by the M22 Rock Crusher and G80 Positraction. Z27 SS and Z22 RS together.
• Hugger Orange paint with the Z87 Custom interior in 720 orange houndstooth. ZL2 Super Scoop hood, D80 spoilers, console with U17 gauges, pushbutton radio with rear speaker, heavy-duty battery, block heater, Rally wheels and F70-14 white letters. Air conditioning is missing only because Chevrolet wouldn’t sell it with the solid-lifter 396.
• Chevrolet’s 1969 totals show how thin the air gets. There were 2,117 M22s across Z/28, L78 and COPO cars; roughly 5,900 ZL2 hoods outside the pace-car packages; 39,875 Z87 interiors; 19,040 D80 spoilers; and genuine RPO L78 production near 3,800. Hugger Orange was 8.5% of the year. GM never published combinations, so nobody can give you an honest “one of” figure for this car. Multiply those fractions together and you’re left with a very small number.
• Its history reads like a road trip. Barry Tompkin, a trapper in Fort St. John, bought it new. Paul Yetman drove it to Newfoundland in 1972, where it passed to Jimmy Cavanaugh of St. John’s and then Roger Tuff. Brian Murray bought it in 1988 and finished the restoration in 1996. The L78 is numbers matching, and the M22 in the car is a correct-type unit.
